Gemina Garland-Lewis is a photographer, EcoHealth researcher, and explorer with experience in over 30 countries across six continents. She grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and received her degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Colgate University in 2008. Following graduation, she completed a year of independent study and exploration through the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, focusing on different cultural relationships with whales and whaling. She worked as a trip leader and photography teacher for high school students with National Geographic Student Expeditions, leading in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Italy, and Tanzania over the course of four years. In 2012 Gemina was named a National Geographic Young Explorer for her photojournalism project entitled "Baleeiros: The Unknown Stories of Azorean Whalers." Gemina completed her M.S. in Conservation Medicine at Tufts University in 2013. She currently resides in Seattle, WA, where she works as research coordinator at the Center for One Health Research in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, assisting on projects that explore health at the human-animal-enviroment interface. She is interested in merging the worlds of photography and One Health, using this as a medium for outreach, communication, education, and evaluation. She is particularly interested in issue-based visual storytelling and participatory photo/video approaches. She is an avid outdoor adventurer, an Explorer for The Outbound Collective, and an ambassador for UCO Gear. |
